team building - Overview

What is an effective, productive, high-performing team?  At its very essence, it is a group of individuals who are energized and aligned to work together toward common goals.  Weak teams are characterized by low trust, poor communication, and lack of cooperation, which results in poor problem solving and decision making, and greatly reduces productivity.  Competent teams operating at their maximum potential are clearly critical to an organizationÌs profitability and success.

team building sessions led by Hcg can help you create winning teams by improving trust, communication, cooperation, and commitment to common purpose.  We assist a team in clarifying and communicating the goals and strategic direction of the team, and enable the team to surface and understand the goals and clarify the roles of each individual.  This enables individual members to align in support of the team.

The group learns how to identify and eliminate patterns of individual and group behavior that have prevented quality problem solving, decision making and getting results.  Collaboration is increased.  Territoriality and infighting are reduced.  Team members use diverse individual styles and competencies to complement each other rather than create conflict.

Our Process

No single agenda can meet the needs of every group.  Each teamÌs requirements are different.  Therefore, our approach is to tailor team building sessions to the work group and its specific challenges.  We:

  • Meet with the key sponsors to identify broad problem areas, details of the teamÌs composition, and overall organizational goals.
  • Interview all team members and cross-section of other employees when desirable.
  • Identify key elements of the organizational culture.
  • Identify themes and problem areas.
  • Review the data with the team leader and provide interviewees with the results.
  • Design a process to address the specific issues and problems identified.
  • Obtain approval for the design from the key sponsors.
  • Schedule and conduct the team building session.
  • Conduct a follow-up session in six to eight weeks to review progress and results.

Key Team Development

The Executive Development Program can be used to assess and develop the management skills and leadership style of each individual on an executive team.  This process can be used in conjunction with a team building to enhance membersÌ understanding of each other and ability to work together toward a common goal.

The Benefits

Formal, structured team building can energize and align individuals to work together toward common goals.  Common approaches to problem solving shift the focus from individual needs to a commitment on mutually agreed upon objectives.  Team members understand their own role and how they can contribute to the group.  Areas of agreement and disagreement are surfaced, allowing long standing conflicts to be resolved.  External facilitators add objectivity, confidentiality, and a broader perspective to the process.
