Back to Executve Development Choosing the Right Coach
One of the most important keys to a successful development program is choosing the right coach. Your coach will serve as your guide and help you attain your goals. Without the right coach, executives often get derailed or sidetracked during the development process.
To get the most out of your development program, your coach should be someone who...
- is experienced in dealing with senior executives and understands what makes executives succeed and fail as managers and leaders
- is an objective outsider
- understands business and the pressures and demands on an executive
- will be honest and give direct, no-holds-barred input
- also understands that feedback can be painful and that a client will need support at times
- has access to objective tools to get reliable and accurate data on a client's style
- can give an executive feedback from enough different directions that crucial themes become clear to the participant
- can help an executive integrate feedback into an understandable package s/he can get his/her arms around
- can help an executive establish a plan to change
- understands the importance of matching an executive's development needs to the strategic needs of his/her company
- can recognize when an executive is backsliding and give him/her a nudge or a boost if needed
- will meet with a client regularly to help him/her sustain momentum for change
As a participant in HCG's Executive Development Program, one of our consultants will be your coach. Our consultants are psychologists with experience in helping exeutives to become better leaders. If you already have a coach, our consultants can work with him/her to make sure your coach understands your developmental needs and how they can be met.
